Notes & Inspiration
Winged Victory of the Deschutes celebrates the spirit of Bend—a community defined by physical engagement, from skiing, biking, hiking, and paddling to the skilled labor that supports the region’s businesses and industries. I hope to pay homage to these elements, the physical engagement emblematic of Bend and the hands-on working nature of this neighborhood.
The sculpture takes the form of an abstract human figure with outstretched wings. These wings are also hands, symbolizing action, ingenuity and the freedom that comes from purposeful work and play. Loosely drawn and feather-like in appearance, the hand-wings move with the wind while remaining connected, so they rise and fall together. Through motion and form, Winged Victory of the Deschutes reflects the balance between labor and leisure, grounding and flight and the enduring connection between human effort and aspiration.

Winged Victory of the Deschutes
Acero inoxidable, vidrio fusionado
18 pies Altura: 24 pies Ancho: 1 pie P

Notes & Inspiration
This kinetic sculpture draws inspiration from the landscape and atmosphere of Bend, where mountain ranges, the Deschutes River, and constant high desert winds shape daily life. Four feather-like forms hover above a mountain-inspired structure, moving gently with the wind and transforming invisible air currents into visible motion. The work is intended to feel both grounded and weightless, anchored to the earth while continuously shifting in response to its environment. High Desert Currents will greet drivers and pedestrians alike, offering a moment of uplift and contemplation.
The feather serves as the central visual language of the work because of its broad and enduring symbolism across cultures and histories. Often associated with freedom, wisdom, courage, and movement, the form reflects Bend’s spirit of exploration and connection to the outdoors. The sculpture also references the relationship between human activity and the surrounding ecosystem, suggesting the constant exchange between landscape, wildlife, climate, and community.

High Desert Currents
Acero inoxidable, acero Corten
18 pies Altura: 9 pies Ancho: 9 pies P

Notes & Inspiration
Skyward Canoes would consist of tall basalt stone columns carved with three small canoes. Ponderosa pine forms—branches, needles, and bark—would be incised into the rock to suggest a journey through a forested landscape.
Volcanic basalt has a weathered light grey-green exterior with a darker brown-black interior. The canoes are intended as regional icons, reflecting both historic and contemporary connections to rivers and recreation. One column features a flowing water form polished to a dark black sheen.
The carved canoes also symbolize life journeys. Scaled at roughly half-size or smaller (three to five feet long) and oriented upward, they are meant to evoke a sense of imagination and ascent. As viewers move around the roundabout, water ripple carvings emerge and, from a distance, resolve into a geometric diamond pattern symbolizing balance.

Skyward Canoes
Columnas de piedra basáltica talladas
18 pies Altura: 24 pies Ancho: 10 pies P
